What ports does MacBook Air (2022) have? Does it have MagSafe?
Apple recently announced the 2022 MacBook Air during its WWDC keynote. In addition to being the first device to ship with Apple's M2 chip, this is the first redesign of MacBook Air since 2018, which means it has a new chassis and new colors. Of course, if any changes are made to the chassis, you may be wondering if the ports on the 2022 MacBook Air have also changed, albeit not much.
The big news with the latest MacBook Air is the long-awaited return of MagSafe, with a new MagSafe 3 port. This is the latest version of MagSafe and supports fast charging. Otherwise, you still get two Thunderbolt/USB4 ports and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
MacBook Air (2022) Ports
As we mentioned, the 2022 MacBook Air now comes with a MagSafe 3 port, which has two major benefits. First, it helps protect your laptop from drops. It's a magnetic connector that only unplugs when you're traveling on the cable and doesn't pull your laptop to the ground or put pressure on the port. It also supports fast charging with the optional 67W power adapter. You must select this charger in the configuration on the Apple website or purchase it separately at a later date.
The headphone jack also got an upgrade this year. Apple says MacBook Air now supports high-impedance headphones via the headphone jack, which means your high-end audiophile headphones may not need an external amplifier. Apple didn't say if this is exactly the same as on the 2021 MacBook Pro and Mac Studio earlier this year, but if it is, the headphone jack can provide 1.25 volts RMS for headphones with impedances up to 150 ohms , or 3 volts RMS to headphones with impedances up to 1,000 ohms. This covers most of the audiophile headphones you can buy today.
Finally, the Thunderbolt ports remain the same. There are two of them, and they are both on the left side, near the MagSafe charging port. While they do support up to 40Gbps of bandwidth, these Thunderbolt ports have significant limitations compared to what you might find on a Windows laptop or even an Intel-based Mac. For one thing, the Apple M2 chip only supports one external display, regardless of resolution (although it can reach 6K displays at 60Hz). And because it uses Apple Silicon, it also doesn't support an external GPU. These two things take away a lot of the versatility of Thunderbolt, so these feel more like fast USB-C ports.
That's all you need to know about the ports on the 2022 MacBook Air. It's not the most versatile setup, but it's an improvement on the previous generation that helped make one of the best Macs even better. It's a great portable machine for college students and young users in general.
